How many of you joined the gym this January? Yep, us too. How many of you stopped going around February 10th? Yep, us too. We all love the idea of staying healthy and exercising, but the reality is that it’s hard to find the time. Not only that, but the gym can feel more like a chore with exercises again and again, and there’s only so much fun you can have on an elliptical trainer. For now, forget the gym, what you need are fun ways to stay fit without the gym that really work and keep it varied.
Water aerobics
This is fantastic way to work out and squeeze in your fitness exercises. If you’ve never done this before, you’re going to feel the burn! It’s regular aerobic exercises, but with the added difficulty of the water. It makes your legs work harder and you’ll burn more calories than normal. It’s also great post-injury to get your body moving again while strengthening your injury.
Yoga
Yoga is a less intense workout but it works wonders for your core. Great fitness all starts with core strength and balance which yoga provides in abundance. It will also improve your flexibility and you’ll soon be nailing poses you never thought you could. If you lead a stress-filled life, this will help you calm down, relax and soothe your breathing.
Dance
Dance is a really powerful aerobic exercise. You’ll burn through hundreds of calories in a single session and feel the energy move through you. Most importantly, it is seriously fun and addictive! There are a number of ways you can get involved with dance such as fitnessed based dance classes like Zumba. On the other hand, there are more elegant forms like ballet or salsa.
Indoor rock climbing
So far we’ve looked at the aerobic exercises. These are the the low-medium intensity workouts that can last for a long period of time. Indoor rock climbing is an example of anaerobic exercise. That means it requires short, sharp burst of energy and lactic acid. Indoor rock climbing is all about balance, poise and movement. It strengthens your core muscles like no other exercise. Think of it like yoga on a wall and you’re half way there!
Martial arts
You’ve never experienced stress relief quite like hitting a punch bag. There is nothing more satisfying and energising! Like dance, there are all kinds of martial arts out there for you. They range from the slow and controlled movements of tai chi to the powerful Krav Maga. They’ll build your strength, awareness and stamina.
