8 Things To Help Kickstart Your Day
I like to think of myself as a morning person, but really, it just depends on how exhausted I am and whether I was up til 3am working on an article (or watching 13 Reasons). I am however trying desperately to get into an everyday routine and getting my full night sleep, so I can start my day on a positive note.
I find that the start of your day usually is what sets things up for the remainder of the day. Of course, when you get up at a reasonable hour and organize your life it usually means your day will most likely follow suite, so I’ve been sticking to these 9 things that have been really helping kickstart my day.
Even if I don’t get to complete each of these steps every morning, I find that at least getting through a few (and the most essential) will make all the difference later in the day:
Make Your Bed
While some would say “why make it if I’m diving back into it in a couple hours”, I’m a firm believer that not only does making your bed in the morning offer a few minutes to just clear your mind to help wake you up, but it is Ah-Mazing to get into it at night after its been made. Let’s call it – a clean slate each day!
Limit Phone Use (Social Media)
This can be one of the hardest things to manage in the morning, but I find it makes all the difference. Even if you work in social media or marketing or are a blogger like me, you can still manage to limit your morning phone use for at least the first 30 minutes of your morning schedule. You can then check a few things off your morning list and then tackle the social media to do’s and get started on your day!
Tackle Your Junk Inbox
Lately, as I kick start my day, I’ve been giving myself a few minutes to just scan my email and delete the trash and flag the emails that I will need to get to asap. That way when I finally sit down to do work, I’m getting down to it right away. If you work at an office, use your commute or even give yourself a few minutes before you leave the house to quickly scan your email. Not only will it save time when things get busy in the office, but its cleansing to get rid of the trash before you get started on your busy day.
Stretch It Out
Stretch-it-out. Since I sit down at a desk most of the day (unless I’m at events or meetings) or unless I’m actually working out, I know how bad it can be for my back to be on my tush all the time, so I’ve been loving the benefits of a morning stretch or yoga sesh. Whether it’s 10 minutes or 30 minutes to start your day, it will make all the difference for your body if you get it moving and stretched before you head out the door and start your workday.
Take a Moment to Enjoy Your Morning Coffee
Some of my checklist items may not take place each morning because, well I’m human, and some days I’m out the door way earlier than usual because of my blog schedule, but one thing is an essential each morning no matter what. My Nespresso machine has become a reliable source each morning to help me wake up and get me ready to take on the world. Since I consider Nespresso to be a coffee that should be enjoyed slowly unlike most coffee brands, I like to dedicate a few minutes to sit down and enjoy my Nespresso while I either let my skincare sink in, scan my emails or post to Insta!
Lately I’ve been obsessed with the limited edition Explorations 1 collection from Laos and Kenya. Both the Laos Bolaven Plateau and Kenya Peaberry coffees are Pure Origins, which means that the coffee has been sourced from a single farm or a group of farms in a specific region. Since visiting the Nespresso Academy last month, I am enjoying these coffees even more because I now know how much thought and hard work went into this new collection. This is a big reason why I take the time to sit and slowly enjoy my Nespresso each morning.
Laos Bolaven Plateau
A region that received high rainfall, volcanic soil and humidity, this environment is perfect for coffee. The 100% washed Arabica beans are used from the region and the blended and roasted in order to maximize the notes, which consist of wheat and green vegetal.
Best Enjoyed: Black to enhance the coffee profile but can also be tasted with milk as a Latte Macchiato
Kenya Peaberries
Kenya is known as the ‘King of Coffees’ and with good reason. The peaberry is considered to be a prized bean with fruity and almost jam-like flavours. Carefully picked by hand, the peaberries roast perfectly due to their mutated round shape that allows heat to evenly penetrate the bean releasing the acidity and fruitness of the coffee.
Best Enjoyed: Black to enhance the coffee profile but can also be tasted with milk as a Latte Macchiato or Cappuccino.
Have Your Breakfast
Yes I know, you hear it all the time – breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but really it’s true! Breakfast fuels you up and gets you ready for the day so you can have more energy, more focus with your work and generally start your day with your belly full!
Meal Prep
At first, meal prep can feel really overwhelming, but once you get your routine down, it will feel amazing to have your meals ready when you need them, AND you can make a healthier decision and save money instead of dining out for every meal. Even if your lunches are usually taken care of, or you like the leftovers, meal prep can sometimes mean prepping for dinner when you get home from work. Whether you pre-cut the veggies or take out food to thaw, at least giving yourself a heads up will help you make better food choices!
Skincare
I am at that age when skincare is vital to looking and feeling good. I’ve mentioned here on the blog that my nighttime routine is down to a T, but I’m finding that my morning skincare routine is just as important. If I have a late start to a day, I even like to apply a brightening mask and sit back with my cup of Nespresso so I can enjoy my coffee and show my skin some love!
This checklist may seem overwhelming at first, but once you get your morning routine down, you will find yourself ready for the day and can plan out the timing as you go. As long as I have my Nespresso in hand in the morning, I feel like I can take on the world!
