A lot of skin care products on the market are believed to contain harsh ingredients that may be dangerous to our internal and external health. We absorb up to 60 percent of the creams, liquids and powders that we apply to our skin, so it makes sense to ensure that the things we put on (and in) our bodies, is both safe and beneficial. In addition, there are many changes we could make to our beauty routines that would result in them being more eco-friendly. Here’s the guide to a green beauty routine.
Choose natural skin care products
Many reputable skin care manufacturers specialise in natural skin care products. They use natural ingredients such as botanicals, minerals and vitamins to create products that are both safe to use and have many benefits for our skin. We are currently loving The Body Shop and their organic ingredients, especially this body butter that happens to be perfect for the typical winter dry skin.
Always check the ingredients
As mentioned, many people fear that ingredients contained in everyday beauty products are harsh and potentially toxic. Always read the list of ingredients and make sure you are aware of those to watch out for so you can limit or prevent your exposure to them.
Opt for home remedies
Using home beauty remedies is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint. Lemons, for example, can be used to lighten your hair and to lighten dark skin around your eyes. Baking soda is a natural exfoliant and honey is a natural moisturizer. So check before you chuck out any ingredients out as they may come in handy as part of your green beauty routine.
Choose sustainable materials
When it comes to buying your makeup brushes, bags, etc. choose to purchase items made of sustainable materials like bamboo or wood, rather than plastic. Also, avoid using makeup or hair brushes that use animal hair. Synthetic materials are just as good and are much fairer to the environment.
Recycle and reuse your products
Recycle plastic and deodorant cans rather than throwing them out. Alternatively, rinse them out and reuse them. Shampoo and shower gel bottles can, believe it or not, be reused as phone chargers and bookends. If, like most women, you have a makeup bag full of half used unwanted items, donate them to friends and family.
There are many ways that you can green up your beauty routine. Focus on using natural products wherever possible. They are better for you and the environment. Additionally, always be mindful of reducing your waste. Good luck!
