Healthy Bread and Spread Combinations

Healthy snacking is a no brainer, but sometimes, we just want a little more variety to spice things up! Above are some great options for bread and spread combinations for you to try when you’re looking for a healthy snack!

  • Veggie cream cheese and cucumber
  • Tuna salad and sliced tomato
  • Almond butter with slivered almonds and dried cranberries
  • Hummus and chopped pepper
  • Apple butter and fresh apple slices
  • Whipped cream cheese and fresh blueberries
  • Light spreadable cheese with ham and grated carrot
  • Blueberry cream cheese and strawberry slices
  • Reduced-sugar jam and cream cheese

When working out, it’s beneficial to eat light carbs right before to give you energy, and concentrate on your major proteins after like meat, fish for when your muscles are more receptive to the powerful muscle-building affects of protein. My personal favourite is hummus with chopped peppers before I go for a workout. Since I am working on building back my muscles (which seem to have gone missing), the hummus is a great protein and the bread will give me the carbs I need for energy.

Apple butter with fresh apple slices is my favourite snack for when I’m needing a little “treat”. I say treat because, let’s face it, ice cream is not an option.

Keep in mind, when putting together a snack that involves bread, stick to 100% whole wheat or whole grain or you can even add these combinations to a rice cake if you want to steer away from breads.
