Two of my favourite things – design (even better, Spanish design) and gastronomy have come together to offer a feast for the senses.
Introducing TAPAS. Spanish Design for Food, on now until August 10 at Toronto’s Design Exchange (DX).
Exploring the fusion of Spanish design and gastronomy through product, art, photography and video, this ingeniously simple exhibit shows typical, traditional objects and their contemporary reinterpretations. It’s the things we encounter everyday, but better – in a way we didn’t even think to look at them.
The purpose of this exhibition is to illustrate how design and food have always been interrelated, and I can’t agree more being a self-proclaimed foodie myself! It includes design, tradition, cuisine, science, the latest trends, art, and innovation and how all have contributed to establishing food habits.
But it was how fruit, for example, took a functional perspective and the way that the pieces invoked a “aha” moment in me that made me fall in love with each piece. Simple and raw, yet totally inspiring!
· The Kitchen highlights instruments that help transform the chef’s environment
· The Table includes domestic objects created to serve and savour food on formal and informal occasions
· The Menu focuses on the design of food itself, from the more traditional to the more innovative avant-garde creations
From such top-notch designers as Patricia Urquiola, Hector Sérrano and Estudio Mariscal, the exhibit includes 150+ accessories, utensils and furnishings – all on display from the curator and Spanish designer, architect and author Juli Capella.
