Try to picture a wedding from before you were born – maybe a relative’s wedding. Do images of puffed sleeves and pastel suits pop into your head? Do you laugh a little, muttering What were they thinking? and knowing you’ll do a much better job when your turn down the aisle comes?
The thing about weddings is that the resulting pictures will almost definitely be looked at, and most likely mocked, many fashion cycles from now. Sure, it’s easy to laugh at yourself past tense when it comes to yearbook photos. But maybe you don’t want to have to laugh at yourself twenty years from now when your daughter asks why you rocked strategically placed cutouts on your wedding day. Maybe “That’s what all the cool kids were doing!” is more of a hot pink prom dress-worthy excuse.
It’s an interesting exercise to dismiss all of the extra-trendy, of-the-moment dresses while looking at the current designer wedding gown collections. Ask yourself: Which details seem appealing right now because they’re on-trend in the non-bridal world? Which details are actually beautiful in their own right? Remember, images of the gown you choose will probably grace your walls for decades to come. So is it so unreasonable to say that on-trend wedding gowns lack an evergreen quality and ought to be shelved?
Below, we’ve sorted through Bridal 2014 for the momentary trends and the forever fits:
