Tips for Budgeting Your Cosmetics 

Cosmetics can run from the very inexpensive to the quite pricey. It is unlikely that you have unlimited dollars to spend on your face, so it can be a challenge to know how to budget your beauty dollars. Each person has different priorities, so everyone will have different ideas of where to save and where to splurge.

Face washing is the first step to healthy skin. If you generally have normal, healthy skin, this may be a place to save money. A drugstore brand cleaner may work perfectly fine for you. If you have problems with breakouts, or wrinkles or dark spots you want to treat, however, you may wish to experiment.

Moisturizing is another area where you can often save money. A basic moisturizer, with sunscreen for daytime use, will often work just fine. Again, if you have specific concerns you want to address, you may wish to experiment with pricier active ingredients. Another way to budget for these more expensive products is to add a serum that you can apply under your normal, less expensive moisturizer. You can use the serum a few days a week, reducing the risk of skin irritation while at the same time stretching out the length of time the serum lasts.

Cosmetics are an easy way to break your beauty budget. It is easy to be tempted by pretty colors or new formulas, and not many people use all of their products until the containers are empty. One easy choice to make is purchasing drugstore brand mascara. You should replace your mascara every three months, so, unless you have a high-end brand you are in love with, this is a great place to experiment with lower priced brands.

Foundations are more of a challenge. If you are able to find a formula you like and a color that matches your skin in a drugstore brand, stick with it. Many people have trouble matching their skin, or find it difficult to select a formula they like. In these cases, it makes sense to spend a little extra for a formula that works with your skin.

Eye shadows are an area where you may want to save and you may want to splurge. The many colors and looks you can create with eye shadow makes it tempting to collect more than you will ever use. For that reason, buying budget products makes sense. You may want to consider high end products because the pigments are often better quality. This makes the colors more vibrant, long lasting, and look better on the skin.

Lipsticks are a great area to go budget. You aren’t likely to use one until it’s gone, and if you select a lower priced brand, you won’t need to feel guilty about picking up a cute color that catches your eye.

Makeup remover is a product you may want to remove entirely from your budget. Use old fashioned cold cream to remove your makeup of the evening, then use your regular face wash product. Cold cream is a gentle, effective way to remove makeup, and you know from experience that your face wash doesn’t cause irritation.

The best way to budget for your cosmetic accessories is to reduce the number of products you use. Nothing saves you as much money as not purchasing anything at all. Eliminating products you don’t need, such as specialized makeup removing washes, and adding specific treatments, such as dark spot fading serums, to use as needed, reduces waste and saves you money.
