Is it true that crossing your legs can cause unsightly varicose veins to appear? The answer to this isn’t straight forward. You see, while crossing your legs won’t cause varicose veins to appear, if they run in your family, it can bring them out. So, if your parents, grandparents or aunts and uncles suffer from varicose veins, then you could to. Of course, it’s not just genetics that determine whether you will suffer from varicose veins. Things like standing for long periods, and aging, also affect your veins.

Not only are varicose veins unsightly, and something that few of us actually want, they can also be somewhat painful. Many people don’t understand what causes varicose veins, but it’s actually pretty simple.

Varicose veins are caused by the valves in the veins giving way, leading to pools of blood forming, stretching the veins. Many people have genetically weaker valves, and so are more prone to developing these pesky, painful veins.

While once you have developed a varicose vein, they can be hard to get rid of, there are treatment options available. Getting rid of a varicose vein might seem impossible, but it’s actually not.

Cover them up

Okay, so this isn’t really a treatment method, but for small veins, like spider veins, this is all that’s necessary. Smaller veins shouldn’t cause any pain or irritation, so are fine being covered up, instead of treated.

The best way to cover these veins is with a coat of fake tan or with water-resistant body makeup, and that should do the trick. You might think that having to reapply makeup or fake tan to cover your veins is irritating, but it’s a good solution.

Get sclerotherapy

If you find that spider veins and small veins are causing you discomfort, then you could get sclerotherapy. This minor procedure involves a detergent solution being injected into the veins, causing them to close.

While this treatment can be a little painful, as it’s long-lasting, it’s worth it. Plus, this is a treatment that can be done relatively quickly, with patients leaving the clinic the same day.

Get endovenous laser ablation

For larger varicose veins, sclerotherapy isn’t the best option. The best treatment option for larger varicose veins is endovenous laser ablation. While endovenous laser ablation is considered to be a minor procedure, you will need to have it done at a specialist vein clinic. Endovenous laser ablation is the latest in varicose vein treatment and is one of the best treatment options.

Laser ablation is performed by inserting a laser fiber into the damaged vein to destroy it. This is a one-time treatment, once the vein has been destroyed, it will no longer cause you any problems. Because a local anesthetic is applied, this treatment should be relatively painless. There may be some bruising afterwards, but that’s about it.

20 years ago, the appearance of a varicose vein meant waving goodbye to being able to wear skirts and shorts. Today, things are different, varicose veins can be treated, with safe, long-term treatment methods.

Today, the appearance of a varicose vein doesn’t mean you are destined to a life of compression stockings. The various treatment options available means that varicose veins can be quickly treated.
