Wedding season is well underway this year, so we talked to Weddingbells’ Editor-in-Chief, Alison McGill, to discuss her list of top trends for 2014 and how they work for a variety of celebration styles and size.

From styles straight off the runway and what’s in for hairstyles, to the new ‘it” colour, radiant orchid and pretty accessories, there are so many trends to have fun with this year, regardless of your budget!

Radiant Orchid is big for 2014 weddings, but how would a bride incorporate it into her wedding without making it look too girly?

Fun ways to incorporate Radiant Orchid into your wedding include your bridesmaid dresses, flowers (bouquets, centrepieces, boutonnieres), bridal accessories (shoes, statement necklace, earrings or cocktail ring) or even your cosmetic palette, as many companies have introduced special Radiant Orchid products (Sephora has a great one called the Sephora + Pantone Universe collection). They key to making the shade look fresh, modern and not too girly is to use it in moderation. Choose one aspect of your wedding to incorporate the colour into.

What are some great hair pieces brides can incorporate into her hairstyle?

Veils are a huge trend right now in bridal and we are seeing them in all styles, lengths and fabrics. Designer like Carolina Herrera and Reem Acra have shown dramatic cathedral length veils made of the most exquisite lace and tulle fabrics, and there are also lots of retro, birdcage veils happening which gives a completely different look. I love the idea of having a little glittery element in hair, and vintage brooches are a nice way of doing that – or sparkly hair combs. Another trend alert that isn’t for hair but adds a hit of sparkle is the ear cuff. A statement piece worn with a dramatic updo looks fresh and modern. Oscar de la Renta showed several ear cuffs at his recent Spring 2015 bridal runway show.

For a non-traditional bride, how can one incorporate greenery for the brides that aren’t into flowers?

Greenery is one of the most interesting trends when it comes to wedding florals. Plants like dusty miller and succulents are very popular for wedding bouquets and centrepieces and a beautiful alternative for a bride who wants a floral element included in her celebration, but not necessarily traditional flowers. Another trend that gives greens without a lot of florals—big bunches of baby’s breath. It’s back and looks amazing when used in large, billowy arrangements which look airy and light.

What are some of the most popular wedding dress styles we are seeing this year?

Top dress trends for 2014 include pink dresses and controlled volume, meaning smaller, sleeker dress silhouettes. Sleeves, embroidery, illusion necklines and of course lace gowns are also on trend right now. There really is a dress style and shape for every bride.

We can’t forget about the groom! What’s a big trend for them this year?

Navy is the big story for grooms. We love navy suits and tuxedos. It’s a classic colour that’s softer than classic black and looks great on everyone. We’ve recently seen navy on the red carpet with Kevin Spacey and Leonardo DiCaprio rocking navy tuxedos at this year’s Oscars.

… And the honeymoon! What are some great honeymoon spots that people may want to consider this year?

Some perennial favourite spots for honeymooning include Bahamas, Hawaii and Italy. Some other places we love for honeymoons include Africa, Paris, Bora Bora, Australia and Scotland. A honeymoon will be the most luxurious vacation many people will ever take, so if it’s in your budget, make it a place that’s a dream destination.
