We have all heard, ‘You won’t know, unless you try it,’ in a number of different contexts. While I could comment on its relevance in the kitchen or bathroom (or even bedroom), it is this principle that guided me to this ‘wine of the week.’ Through a VQA focused wine tasting class, I discovered Southbrook Vineyard’s 2012 Connect White and it is now one of my favourite wines…ever.
Unsurprisingly, I am not the only person who feels this way. I met an award winning sommelier that received a few bottles of Southbrook and was less than excited. Needless to say, she opened a bottle of Chardonnay by accident and fell in love. She is a Southbrook lover now and ranks it among her favourites.
Southbrook Winery is organic and biodynamic which means that it is a self-contained eco system: a cohesive, interconnected living system. This system improves the health of vines, the grapes and soil fertility using nine specific preparations made from manure, silica and seven medicinal plants. Some wine drinkers and sommeliers have said that biodynamic wines have greater expressions and stronger aromas, flavours, textures and contain more floral notes. Conversely, there are also skeptics who disagree but to a certain point, all wine tasting is somewhat subjective- You will have to try it for yourself to be sure.
Southbrook correctly describes this refreshing white as the ‘anti-snob’ and even their bottle is environmentally friendly. Connect is light and fruity, smelling (and tasting) of peach, melon, apricot and even a hint of apple. And although the weather isn’t quite there yet, rest assured that this is the perfect wine to drink chilled on a summer day…or spring day…Or when you turn up the heat in your house and pretend it’s summer. Match it with a light fish, prawns or scallops. Regardless of when you drink it, you will love it!
At only 9.6% alcohol, you can pick up this beauty at the LCBO for $14.95
