Wine of the Week: A Ca’d’Or Masquerade

Wine of the Week: A Ca’d’Or Masquerade

Last Wednesday, I was invited to ‘sparkle’ at the Canadian launch of Ca’d’Or: Noble Italian Sparkling Wine, at the revamped Buonanotte on Mercer Street. The invite proclaimed this would be a ‘Masquerade that would entice my senses,’ a line that enticed me in itself.

Now, as I plan my wedding, I keep note of the most delicious wines and bubblies I taste, with the hopes of ordering a case to enjoy on my special day. I have chosen most of my wines, bar my top 5 favourites – a list I am compiling exclusively for head table consumption. While I have settled on a few wines, there is still space on the menu.

Perhaps most importantly, I have not yet landed on a bubbly for myself and the bridesmaids to drink while we get our hair pinned, make up applied and dresses zipped. This is obviously a crucial decision. So why am I telling you this? To set the stage, of course! I entered the Ca’d’Or launch with hopes of finally finding ‘the one.’

The restaurant was beautiful: the dark and purple lighting oozed with seduction, the white furniture exuded sexiness and beautiful while masked waitresses poured Ca’d’Or into flutes. Good looking waiters circulated with delicious Italian hors d’oeuvres while keeping an eye on your glass, ensuring it was never less than ¼ full. The atmosphere delivered, as promised, a celebration that truly enticed all of my senses.

This blanc de blancs Ca’d’Or was light, crisp and refreshing, thankfully lacking that yeasty odour that sometimes accompanies sparkling wines and champagnes. It wasn’t overly carbonated so the bubbles didn’t go up ones nose when sipping too quickly. This noble Italian Sparkling Wine had aromas of apple and delicate blossom and a touch of lemon zest as well as a slight minerality told me that this silky wine not overly complex but it was lusciously memorable and devilishly delicious.

A lot of people choose their wines based on the aesthetics of the label and Ca’d’Or did not disappoint in this category either. The bottle was made of frosted white glass etched in beautiful gold calligraphy. A golden butterfly mask invites you to indulge in its contents, almost daring you not to be seduced.

But enough of the teasing: What you really want to know is did I find the one? Is my quest for the ‘dressing bubbles’ over?

While I would not like to publicly commit myself to this Italian Sparkling Wine, I can tell you that this is definitely something that I would like to explore further. I know I like it, a lot, but what if there is something better out there? How will I know?!

I will keep an open mind. It could be just lust…but who knows – This could be true love…

Ca’d’Or is not yet in the LCBO but it currently available online through their broker: www.rtbrokers.com for $29 a bottle and $179 for a case of six.
