Wine of the Week: Small Talk’s ‘Faux Pas’

I have one special VQA friend. We share the same tastes in wine, our newest discoveries and often the bottle itself. It was this friend that first mentioned Small Talk. ‘Have you heard of it?’ she asked. ‘It’s really yummy.’ So next time I was at the LCBO (buying champagne for another friend), I picked up a bottle.

She was right- It is very yummy.

Small Talk is a small, boutique winery in Niagara that has been family run for 50 years. First of all, these wines have great names. They are catering to the millennial woman (like you and me) and with blends called, ‘RSVP,’ ‘For the host,’ and ‘Burning Ambition,’ they are making wine what it should be – fun. Their wines are perfect for a social gathering, prompting chatter with label lines like ‘Long time no see,’ ‘How is ol’ what’s his name’ on the front and what we’re really thinking, ‘I can’t believe I said that with a straight face,’ and ‘I’ve been avoiding you for years’ on the back.  Their  website is accessible (they invite you to ‘Call for a chat’) and it is no wonder this cheeky wine is flying off of the shelf.

I grabbed a bottle of their ‘Faux Pas’ wine, a 2011 Sauvignon Blanc- Riesling blend. I popped it in the fridge a few days before cracking it open and it was perfectly chilled when I finally poured it into my glass.

This wine is light and crisp. ‘Faux Pas’ has a pleasantly dry finish with notes of lemon/citrus, flowery aromas and a hint of minerality. It was a very easy drink, perfect after a stressful day and a good work out- before I knew it, my glass was empty.  With a mere 11.5% alcohol, it is easy to go through half a bottle and not even notice.

Will I be buying this wine again? Yes. Definitely- And thank you to my VQA friend for the recommendation. I am paying it forward by recommending it you, girls of TO! Definitely bring this cheeky wine to your next dinner party or date night with the girls. They will thank you for it…At least to your face.

Small Talk is available at the LCBO for $12.95.
