Montreal-based design house Rudsak gave us a lesson in cool-girl (and guy) clothing at World Mastercard Fashion Week SS 2014 on Thursday. Rudsak always produces quality leather pieces and solid basics, but this season’s collection was amped up by textured leather and groupie-worthy metallics. It was the sort of show that makes you want to join a rock band: shirts adorned with structural lines, python shorts and all manner of leather jackets. But the vests stole the show – who could choose between poison-yellow cobra and burgundy croc? New mission: find out how many Rudsak pieces can be layered at once! There couldn’t have been a more appropriate show-closer than the metallic overalls that finally stomped down the runway.

We got a chance to chat with Evik Asatoorian, Rudsak’s uber-charming, très français designer, post-show. Check out the interview below!

Girls of T.O.: Rudsak is all about timeless, quality pieces. What is one quality piece that every woman should own?

Evik Asatoorian: There’s one particular piece [from the Rudsak collection] that I really love: the vest. It’s like a motorcycle jacket without sleeves. That’s a nice piece – an easy piece. You could make it elegant, you could make it very cool. It’s easy to wear with everything, so that’s the one piece I would choose.

GoTO: Your spring/summer 2014 collection features a lot of textured leather. Is that a new love for you?

E. A.: Going back twenty years, I’ve done so many different things in leather. Being able to explore python and metallic… metallic creates a truly rock stage look. I had fun exploring all of that.

GoTO: What celebrities speak to your design aesthetic? Who would you want to dress?

E. A.: I like people who are not always in the media. It’s so nice to see a rock star who becomes very famous. If you look back, the true rock stars never really change their looks. Depeche Mode – the singer [Dave Gahan], for me, is always the same guy, and will always be the same guy. I admire people who have a perfect image that’s timeless. Any classic band – The Rolling Stones never really change. After five decades they always go back to that look. To me rock band style is always admirable – give me attitude!

GoTO: Can you talk about the hair and makeup story you created on the runway tonight?

E. A.: The girls [models] are so natural – let them be beautiful. For guys, it’s not always easy to find a look, but I find every look is nice today. Long hair is coming back, beards are easy, short hair… it’s so nice to show that you can do everything. We tried to have a bit of every type of look in there. This is summer – summertime to me is when it’s very easy to explore yourself. In the fall we bundle ourselves up and there are particular colours we go for. In the summer people just want to be free. So I just let it be natural.

It doesn’t take much to make Canadian modelling sensation Dauphine Mckee look like perfection!
