On October 20th – 25th, Fashion enthusiasts of Toronto gathered together to support Canadian fashion and its designers at World Mastercard Fashion Week. The week-long event was full of inspiring Canadian looks for men and women along with photo-worthy street style outside the tents, new exciting presentations and off-sight awards and parties – all which piece together some of our favourite highlights from the week.
Toronto fashion week was successful for returning designer and Mercedes Benz start-up winner, Sid Neigum who kicked off WMCFW on Monday with an intricately detailed and structured collection that had everyone in awe. While the six Mercedes-Benz Start Up finalists showcased stunning Minnie- inspired looks, it was Sid Neigum’s design that took home the winning prize.
While heavy hitter, Joe Fresh opted out of a runway show in exchange for a fun evening party with an appearance by Solange Knowles, Target showcased their Fall 2014 collection Tuesday night and gave us a fun runway show featuring womens, mens, and kids looks which we are coveting this season. We even got to see bullseye walk the runway!
It wouldn’t be fashion week without its menswear shows. Favourites like HD Homme showed us what a well dress man in a bold suit should look like, while Christopher Bates showcased a number of spring must haves including camo prints, khaki separates and lightweight sweaters. This coming spring will also bring stylish outerwear from Soia & Kyo, who’s collection features a crisp and classic palette of beige, white, brown, and a pop of yellow and Montreal-based designers of Mackage give us moto and bomber jackets to look forward to next year.
Outerwear favourites for the women come from Soia & Kyo with classic and tailored trench coats and Mackage with a vibrant cobalt blue moto jacket that is sure to be on everyone’s spring wishlist. Pink Tartan returned to WMCFW on day 1 with sophisticated and stylish runway looks inspired by the groovy 70’s including chic jumpsuits, flowy frocks, and playful prints designed by Kim Newport-Mimran.
Rachel Sin’s #RSWork #RSPlay collection was just that; ideal for work and play next spring with figure flattering silhouettes and romantic prints, while her vibrant yellow cutout dress was one of our favourite looks from the week. Another fashion week designer highlight, Matthew Gallagher really knows the way to a woman’s heart as he presented one of our chosen collections of the week showcasing his attention to detail with intriquite pleats and beaded embellishments.
NARCES collection was inspired by extravagantly decorated birdcages of the Victorian age with floral textures, decorative lace, and airy woven materials, with the collection highlight powder blue lace dress. World Mastercard Fashion Week then saved the most grand for last with Mikael D closing the shows with a stunning spring 2015 collection that was nothing short of extraordinary featuring sequins, dramatic fabrics, and large ball gowns – a collection fit for a princess.
The makeup and beauty looks for WMCFW were provided by Maybelline New York lead artist Grace Lee and Redken Canada’s Jorge Joao which complimented each show with hair and makeup trends that we won’t be waiting for spring to try. Both Rachel Sin and Mikael D took the crown for best hair of the week modeling different versions of chic faux bobs that were both sophisticated and romantic, as well as Pink Tartan who demonstrated the perfect retro loose wave. Fresh face makeup looks took over the runway as most designers opted for simple and clean makeup to allow the fashion to do the talking.
Lucky for us, we have a lot of great fashion to look forward to next spring.
